What Can Be Done for TMJ in East Gwillimbury Area

At Harvest Hills Dental Care, we know that conditions such as TMJ or TMD can become highly problematic and interfere with day-to-day activities. TMJ, an acronym for the temporomandibular joint, is the jaw joint hinging the upper and lower jaw. It allows us to open and close our mouths to eat and speak. When it starts to malfunction, it can cause a number of issues that can impact one’s quality of life. Our dental team in East Gwillimbury, Ontario, can provide an evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for TMJ or the disorder known as TMD.

What are the signs of TMJ/TMD?

There are a variety of signs and symptoms associated with TMJ/TMD. It’s important to note that not everyone experiences all of the symptoms, and they can range from mild to severe. Some of the more common signs include:

  • Pain of the jaw joint or muscles
  • A clicking or popping sound during the opening or closing of the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing or pain while chewing
  • Pain in the face, neck, shoulders, or ears
  • Headaches or migraines

How is TMJ/TMD diagnosed?

At Harvest Hills Dental Care, we take a comprehensive approach to diagnosing TMJ/TMD. We will review your personal medical and dental history, as well as ask you about your symptoms. We will then physically examine your head, neck, and jaw. This may include checking for alignment problems, tenderness, clicking sounds, and limited movement. We might also use x-rays or other imaging tests to get a better look at the jaw joint.

What is an effective treatment for TMJ/TMD?

The good news is that TMJ/TMD can be treated effectively. The treatment chosen for the patient depends on the condition’s underlying cause. In some cases, simple lifestyle changes, such as avoiding hard foods, may be enough to relieve the symptoms. If the problem is more severe, we may recommend splint therapy, which is a mouthguard-like device that is worn at night to protect the teeth and jaw joint. In severe cases, surgery may be recommended.
