Protect your teeth with custom sports mouth guards in East Gwillimbury, ON

Did you know that traumatic sports injuries are among the leading causes of knocked out teeth? If you or your child participates in any type of contact sport, it’s important to ensure that their head, including their mouth is protected properly from injury. At Harvest Hills Dental Care, we offer patients in East Gwillimbury, and Newmarket, ON with high quality, custom sports mouth guards to dramatically reduce the risk of damage to the face and mouth.

Sports Mouthguards, explained

Mouthguards are a plastic appliance that is worn over the teeth while individuals are participating in sports. Traumatic injury to the mouth can result in permanent damage that can be costly to restore. Wearing a sports mouthguard allows individuals to participate in sports while at the same time maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile.

Types of Sports Mouthguards

There are many different types of mouthguards available. Below we’ll explain the differences.

  • Ready-to-wear – These are the pre-made mouthguards that you can find at any sports store. While they will provide some protection, they are one-size-fits all and will feel thick and bulky. They may also hinder the ability to breathe normally.
  • Boil and bite – These are a step above ready to wear, but still do not provide a high level of protection. Even boiling and biting doesn’t do much to improve the fit.
  • Custom-made – These offer the most amount of protection. Custom fit sports mouthguards are made specifically to fit the individual’s oral structure. That means it will allow athletes to breathe and swallow normally and that it will be the appropriate thickness to provide optimal protection from traumatic injury during sports.

Caring for your sports mouthguard

Your custom mouthguard is made after a simple, quick visit in our office. We’ll take impressions and create a detailed model of the teeth to allow for custom fabrication of the mouthguard.

Once you take your mouthguard home, it’s important to take proper care of it in order to extend its life. When it’s not being worn, the mouthguard should be stored in its container to prevent it from being damaged. It should also be cleaned after each use with a toothbrush and toothpaste to eliminate bacteria and keep the appliance from smelling.
