What are some things I need to know about wisdom teeth removal?
Your wisdom teeth, or “third molars,” do not erupt into the dental arch until your late teen or early adult years and can become extremely problematic. However, removal is common and performed at Harvest Hills Dental Care of East Gwillimbury, Ontario. Our doctors are pleased to educate patients on things to know about their upcoming appointments to clarify the process and put minds at ease!
Things to know about wisdom teeth removal at Harvest Hills Dental Care in East Gwillimbury, Ontario:
- It will not be painful. We understand that tooth extraction sounds like a painful experience, but we ensure our patients are comfortable by providing local anesthetics and sedation before and during the procedure. After the procedure, we will provide aftercare instructions and suggest medication to alleviate discomfort during the healing process.
- It may be simple or surgical. There are two methods of wisdom teeth removal: simple and surgical. A simple extraction is generally performed when the tooth is fully erupted and can be removed easily with forceps. Surgical extraction is necessary when the tooth has not fully emerged or is impacted (encased in gum tissue or bone). In this case, our dentists at Harvest Hills Dental Care may need to make an incision in the gum tissue or remove a small amount of bone to extract the teeth.
- It can alleviate discomfort due to impaction. Some patients may experience pain due to the impaction of their wisdom teeth. This is when the tooth does not have enough room to fully emerge into the dental arch, leading to swelling, pain, and even infection. Our dentists can alleviate this discomfort and prevent future issues by removing the impacted wisdom teeth.
