What is the process of obtaining dental implants?
Our dentists at Harvest Hills Dental Care regularly work with patients in and around the community of East Gwillimbury, Ontario, to provide quality restorations. When missing teeth are a concern, our team will talk to you about the options available. Dental implants are a popular procedure used to replace one or more teeth, and our providers will educate you on the dental implant process.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are unique titanium posts that are surgically placed directly into the jawbone to act as a tooth root. Once the implant finally heals and properly fuses with the bone, a dental crown is placed on the top of the dental implant to replace the missing tooth. Dental implants can replace one or multiple teeth, depending on how the abutment is restored.
What is the process of getting dental implants for my smile?
Obtaining dental implants requires patients to have enough bone structure to support the implant itself. This is determined with x-rays. Patients will schedule an oral surgery, during which our provider will place the implant (or implants) into the bone. Several weeks and months are needed for the bone to fuse with the implant through a process called osseointegration, after which our team at Harvest Hills Dental Care can place a restoration over the abutment. This may be a crown, bridge, or even a full cosmetic denture.
What are the advantages of dental implants when compared to alternative options?
There are many benefits of dental implants, including:
- Dental implants both look and feel like your natural teeth.
- Dental implants are permanent and don’t need to be replaced like other tooth replacement options such as dentures or bridges.
- Dental implants do not require any specialized care. You simply brush and floss the implants just like your natural teeth.
- Dental implants preserve the jawbone, which can often shrink following tooth loss.
