Why wisdom tooth extraction is standard, and other common wisdom tooth questions answered

It is estimated that at least 80 percent of the population should have their wisdom teeth extracted. It is natural to wonder why so many people need wisdom teeth removed. If it has been recommended that you or your child have theirs extracted, you likely have several other questions about the process. At Harvest Hills Dental Care in East Gwillimbury, Ontario, we believe in the power of educated patients and love answering our patients’ questions about this standard procedure.
Why is wisdom tooth extraction so common?
Our dentists may recommend wisdom tooth extraction (either simple extraction or surgery, depending on the patient’s needs) for several reasons – most of which come down to the issue of space in the patient’s mouth. When there is insufficient room for the wisdom teeth to erupt correctly, they can cause many oral health issues, including:
- Pain
- Swollen, irritated gums
- Damage to the surrounding teeth
- Movement of the other teeth
- Development of infections, cysts, and abscesses
- Shifting the bite into misalignment
- Inability to clean the surrounding teeth effectively
When is the most suitable time to remove wisdom teeth?
In general, we recommend wisdom tooth extraction at the earliest time possible because the process is more straightforward when the roots have not fully developed. Additionally, removing them early helps prevent oral health problems from developing and progressing.

Will I need surgery?
The process for extracting wisdom teeth depends on whether they have fully erupted or are impacted (unable to grow normally). Teeth that have fully erupted can typically be removed through a simple extraction process, whereas impacted teeth require an outpatient surgical procedure.
