How is gingivitis treated?

Gingivitis Treatment in East Gwillimbury ON Area

East Gwillimbury, Ontario area patients who have bleeding or swollen gums, will need to schedule an appointment with their dentist for an evaluation to determine if a dental gum infection is present. The earliest stage of periodontal disease, referred to as gingivitis, requires early detection and treatment to prevent it from becoming more serious.

What is gingivitis?

Our dentists at Harvest Hills Dental Care describe gingivitis as an inflammation of the gums that is usually a result of plaque build-up on the teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of food debris, saliva, and bacteria. If it is not removed by a dental hygienist, it will harden into tartar (calculus). Gingivitis ranges from mild to severe and, if left untreated, can lead to periodontitis, which is an inflammation of the gum tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth.

What are the signs that I might have gingivitis?

Symptoms of gingivitis include red, swollen, or bleeding gums.

Can gingivitis be treated?

Gingivitis is reversible with good oral hygiene habits and professional dental cleanings. However, if gingivitis is left without treatment, it can progress to periodontitis. This can result in irreparable damage to the smile and the loss of gum tissue, jawbone, and natural adult teeth. Catching gingivitis in the earliest stages offers the best chances of treating the condition and bringing the smile back to health.

What may be done to treat gingivitis?

  • Thorough, extensive dental cleanings to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth
  • The use of antibiotics either directly in the smile or through prescription medications taken orally
  • The use of medicated mouthwashes to restore oral health
  • Educate patients on how to properly brush and floss to avoid the future return of gingivitis
