What types of Dentures are available for replacing missing teeth?
Dentures are one of many reliable solutions available for patients looking to replace missing teeth. At Harvest Hills Dental Care in East Gwillimbury, near Newmarket, Ontario, we strongly advise patients who have lost teeth to speak to a dentist as soon as possible about their options for replacement. In many cases, dentures might be a great choice!
There are several different denture options that a patient can choose from to achieve their smile goals. Below are a few of the ways dentures can be used to restore your smile’s appearance and functionality:
- Partial dentures: Partial dentures are restorations that typically contain a thin metal framework with small metal clasps and false teeth to replace one or several missing teeth in a dental arch. The appliance is placed onto the arch and uses the existing teeth as support to hold it in place. Patients can remove and replace the partial denture as needed and are advised to clean and care for it just as they do with their remaining natural teeth.
- Full dentures: Full dentures are appliances that contain false teeth and gums and replace an entire arch of teeth. Some patients will have their teeth removed to obtain full dentures instead. These are held in place with natural suction or adhesives available over-the-counter at local drugstores.
- Implant-supported dentures: Alternatively, patients looking to replace all teeth in an arch may consider a more conservative option such as implant-supported dentures. These restorations use four to six dental implants inserted along the arch to anchor the denture in place. These dentures offer more stability and prevent bone resorption, maintaining as much jawbone as possible over time.
