Canadian Dental Care Plan

Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan: Key Information and Eligibility

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal government dental program run by Sun Life Financial designed to lower the cost of dental treatment and make dental services affordable and accessible, ensuring comprehensive oral health care for qualified Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents. Under the program, those without dental insurance with adjusted family net incomes under $90,000 may access a wide range of covered dental services.

Important Note: Harvest Hills Dental Care accepts patients covered under the CDCP Plan. However, we do not administer the program. All applications must be submitted through Service Canada before booking an appointment with us.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the CDCP, applicants must fulfill the following criteria:

  • No Access to Dental Insurance: Applicants should not be able to possess dental coverage through employer benefits, pension plans, or private insurance.
  • Adjusted Family Net Income: Household income must be below $90,000.
  • Canadian Residency: Applicants must be residents of Canada for tax purposes.
  • Tax Filing: Applicants should have filed a tax return for the previous year.

As of 2025, applications are open to all eligible Canadian residents. This includes the final group of adults aged 18 to 64 that became eligible over the course of May 2025.

Coverage and Co-Payments

The CDCP covers a range of dental services, including preventive care, diagnostic services, restorative treatments, and oral surgery. However, the program may not cover the full cost of all services. Depending on the adjusted family net income, co-payments may be required:

  • Income Below $70,000: 100% coverage of eligible services.
  • Income Between $70,000 and $79,999: 60% coverage; 40% co-payment.
  • Income Between $80,000 and $89,999: 40% coverage; 60% co-payment.

It’s important to note that the CDCP fee rates may differ from those of provincial and territorial fee guides, potentially leading to additional out-of-pocket expenses.

Note: For more detailed information and the latest updates and changes on CDCP, please visit the official website of the Government of Canada.

Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) FAQs

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), and who is it for?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a government initiative designed to ensure that all Canadians can access the dental care they require without experiencing financial hardship. This program primarily targets low- and middle-income families who may lack private dental insurance, as it is essential that everyone has the opportunity to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile! The plan seeks to improve overall well-being and promote better oral health for all Canadians by making dental care more affordable.

What dental services are covered under the CDCP?

The plan encompasses a comprehensive range of essential dental services designed to enhance oral health. This includes routine cleanings, thorough examinations, dental x-rays, fillings, and even a selection of emergency procedures. Essentially, it serves as a protective safety net for ensuring that your pearly whites remain in optimal condition!

Am I eligible for the CDCP?

Your eligibility for services is based on your income level and access to private dental insurance. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, don’t worry! Clear instructions are available online to help you determine if you qualify. Additionally, our dedicated team is here to provide support and guidance if you have any questions or need further assistance.

How can I apply for the CDCP?

Applying is both simple and stress-free! The government provides an online portal where you can quickly complete your application without any hassle. If you don’t consider yourself tech-savvy or feel unsure about entering your information online, don’t worry—a phone call can easily guide you through the process and assist you in submitting your application correctly.

Will my kids be covered, too?

Absolutely! The plan is specifically designed to support families, ensuring that your little ones can also have their regular checkups and cavity treatments covered. Establishing healthy habits and fostering healthy smiles start at an early age, and this plan aims to make that happen!

When will my coverage begin?

When you first submit your application, there will be a designated period during which your eligibility for coverage is assessed. After this evaluation, you will receive insurance cards that you can use whenever you attend appointments. These cards will ensure that you receive the necessary benefits and coverage for all of your oral health needs.
